You never get a second chance to make a…
First impression.
Do you remember that line for the Head & Shoulders commercials in the 80s?
Well, first impressions are important for all aspects of life.
When it comes to your home, first impressions are vital. It sets the tone for potential buyers to get excited about buying your home.
A home’s first impression begins with curb appeal. Remember, when house hunters pull up to your house, they are either going to be excited or disappointed. They are considering from the beginning if your home is worth getting out of the car to view its interior. Just like a picture is worth 1000 words, a home’s curb appeal is worth thousands of dollars.
If you’re ready to spruce up your curb appeal, I have fantastic news. You do not have to spend a lot of money to upgrade the exterior. Simple things like a freshly mowed lawn, clutter-free porch or doorway, and clean walkway make a huge difference.
Below are five additional ideas you can use to improve your curb appeal.
Update Your Hardware
Sometimes little things can make a huge impact. That’s what switching out hardware can do. Consider updating details such as:
- House numbers
- Wall-mounted mailbox
- Porch light
When they are dated or weather worn, this is a great place to begin updating your curb appeal. Be sure to ensure your updated hardware matches in terms of style and finishes. You also want to get hardware that matches the style of your home.
Change Colors
We always hear that paint is a cheap way to update a room in your home. Well, same goes for outdoors. A simple can of paint can make a huge impact. You can use paint to update (or refreshen) your front door, shutters and/or trim.
Use Your Green Thumb
In addition to freshening up the inside of your home, planing some flowers along your front walkway or adding planters by your front door can give your home a welcoming feel. Have fun by creating your own or purchase pre-arranged flowers from your local garden center. Just don’t forget to water them to keep them from dying.
Tidy Up Your Landscaping
No matter how great your house looks, there’s just something about a nice landscape. It’s like the icing on a delicious cake. Trim any overgrown overgrown branches and shrubs. This will give buyers the impression that you take care of the large and small details regarding your home. Trim any trees or shrubs that rub up against your house. If not, you can damage your siding and animals will use it as a path to your roof or under the siding.
Create a “Living Area” Outdoors
We often only think about outdoor living when it comes to a backyard patio. If your space allows it, create a living space to add curb appeal. You can add outdoor seating (i.e. chairs and/or loveseat) to a front porch. Additional ideas include using an outdoor rug and small table. This with pops of color through the rug and pillows will draw potential buyers in. Just make sure your selections are weatherproof and will withstand the rain and sun beaming on them.
