Hats off to homeowners.

Owning a home is a great responsibility. As an Arlington homeowner for just over seven years, I totally respect what it means to be a homeowner.

We set the tone for making a neighborhood a great place to live. From neighborly friendliness to attention to home maintenance and appearance, homeowners have a lot at stake.

Many homeowners, like me, are contemplating some major home improvement projects. This often occurs after overdosing on a few nights of HGTV.

If you’re thinking about spending some money on home improvements, you need to know about the Arlington Home Improvement Incentive Program.

Arlington Home Improvement Incentive Program

Homeowners who spend at least $20,000 on home improvements may be eligible to receive an incentive payment equivalent to 10 times the amount of their increased City property taxes. Note that home improvements funded by federal housing programs such as the Housing Rehabilitation Program are not eligible for the Arlington Home Improvement Incentive Program.

To participate, homeowners must submit a Home Improvement Incentive application and building permit application to the City prior to improvements. The Community Development & Planning Department of the City of Arlington will review and approve the application and the One Start Center will review and approve your building permit request.  Once your improvement project is complete, homeowners must submit evidence of their post-improvement City property tax payment. With final City approval, the Finance Department will issue payment to the homeowners.

Examples of Home Improvements

Homeowners must make their own decisions about what type of home improvements to make to their home. Some ideas of home improvement projects that add value to a home include:

  • Increasing the size of your home
  • Remodeling a bath, kitchen or other room
  • Adding a garage
  • Improving a home’s landscaping

The thing to think about is spending money on projects that actually add value to the home. So considerations about your neighborhood and reaching out to real estate experts is probably a good idea before starting your project.
